Sixth Street is Austin's answer to Bourbon Street, lined up one side and down the other with drinking establishments. While that busy corridor is certainly worth a visit, if you want to hang with the locals, better to seek out the less obvious joints scattered across the city. Claudia Alarcon describes her favorite, Nomad Bar, in Coronado Hills.
"Not all who wander are lost." This quote by J.R.R. Tolkien is the mantra at Nomad Bar, the coolest hangout in North Austin and the most welcome addition to the previously forgotten, somewhat run down Coronado Hills neighborhood.
Tucked in a tiny strip mall behind Capital Plaza, the Nomad defies any label or category. It is a cool gathering place where people from all social groups and ages can enjoy a beer, glass of wine, or cocktail, alone or with friends. A clean, laid back atmosphere, efficient service, killer jukebox, and a lushly landscaped patio help patrons forget that they are but a block away from IH-35.
The long time dream of El Paso native Miguel Jimenez, Nomad reflects his love for world travel and all things international (including his Czech-born wife Alena). Paper currency from all over the world — from his own travels as well as gifts from visiting patrons hailing from different nations — covers the wall behind the bar. A revolving line-up of paintings, photographs, and collages by local artists adorns the other walls, a testament to Jimenez' love for art. In the patio, a three-dimensional steel wall sculpture of the globe lights up at night, showing hundreds of geographically correct dots as illuminated cities.
Thanks to his Mexican and Navajo heritage, Jimenez has always embraced diversity and culture. Nomad hosts a variety of entertainment, from Rock en Espanol night, to comedy improv, punk rock karaoke, live underground radio broadcasts, outdoor movies, and wine dinners. There is always something for everyone. That's what makes it a great neighborhood bar.
Nomad Bar's menu features an impressive list of libations from around the world, from Yucatan to Turkey, Brazil to Croatia. Wine selections go outside the house red and white to include interesting varietals, and a small selection of eclectic bites is available for noshing.
Neighborhood residents crowd Nomad Bar on Sundays for an affordable and delicious brunch by Traveling Bistro, a catering company specializing in international fare. An all-you-can-eat buffet featuring made to order omelets and waffles, lox and bagels, fresh fruit, and an ever-changing selection of entrees costs only $15. Add $10 for bottomless mimosas and you've got a great deal.
Nomad Bar has revitalized a tired old location, transforming it into a bustling scene that provides a safe and fun place for neighbors to gather. It has remained Austin's best kept secret for the last year, but it won't stay that way for much longer.
Insider Tips: Mondays feature $1 Tecates all day, and the bar is not as crowded so there's plenty of space. Bring your laptop any day and get some work done using the WiFi while sitting on a comfy couch, sipping a pint of one of the local micro-brews.
The antithesis of tourist traps, best-kept secrets appeal to both travelers and locals alike. To kick off 2010, we asked Austin lifestyle journalists to send us their best-kept secrets. We then ranked them using — what else — our own secret formula. While we recognize the irony of publicizing secrets, it's impolite not to share so please do so.
